Detailed description

Crystal Glazes are crystalline glazes for stoneware and porcelain that grow real crystals in the glaze surface during cone 6–7 firings, creating deep glassy effects and truly unique pieces. Perfect for studio potters, artists and teaching studios, they develop crystals already at 1220°C with a short soak and even larger formations with controlled cooling schedules.

Key features

  • True crystalline glaze with visible crystal growth in firing
  • No two pieces are ever the same, ideal for artistic ceramics
  • Suitable for high-fire stoneware and porcelain bodies
  • Glassy surface can be enhanced with a Vibes top coat
  • Designed for cone 6–7 firings with optional advanced schedule

Technical specifications

  • Temperature: 1220°C cone 6 (20 min soak) and advanced cone 7 cycle
  • Heating: 175°C/hour to 1210°C with 10 min hold
  • Controlled cooling and reheating between 1023°C and 987°C for crystal growth
  • Application: 2–3 coats by brush, sponge or stamp as a top layer
  • Glaze catcher strongly recommended for full crystalline firings
  • Results depend on clay body, thickness, glaze combinations and kiln atmosphere

Instructions for use

  • Stir the glaze thoroughly before and during application
  • Apply 2–3 even coats, letting each coat dry fully before the next
  • Reduce the number of coats near the base to minimise running
  • Use the simplified cone 6 schedule or the full cone 7 crystalline schedule as required
  • Always run tests on your own clay body and kiln to fine-tune the effect
